Individual part machining refers to the process of manufacturing a single part, or distinct components, rather than mass-producing parts in bulk or machining assemblies together.

It’s typically used for prototypes, custom parts, mold parts for tooling, mechanical components for automation equipment, repair/replacement components, or low-volume production.

Individual part machining involves shaping, drilling, milling, turning, wire-cutting EDM, Sinker EDM, or grinding a single piece of raw material (metal, plastic, etc.) into a precise, functional component according to design drawings or CAD data.

The Common Processes of Individual Part Machining:

  • CNC Milling: For creating complex shapes or surfaces using rotating tools.
Commonly used machines are 3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis CNC milling machines.
  • CNC Turning (Lathe): For cylindrical or round parts.
  • The typical machines are the CNC Lathe machines.
  • EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining): For hard metals or intricate shapes.
  • EDM includes Wire-cut EDM and Sinker Discharge EDM.
  • Wire-cut EDM can be subdivided into fast Wire EDM, middle-speed Wire EDM, and slow Wire EDM. For precision machining, we mostly use the slow wire EDM.
  • Grinding: For achieving tight tolerances or fine surface finishes.
Grinding includes various kinds of grinding methods. They are profile grinding, Jig grinding, cylindrical grinding, surface grinding, centerless grinding, internal and external round grinding, etc.
  • Drilling, Tapping, Reaming: For holes and threads.
  • Polishing: It needs better surface roughness, after which we may need to do an extra polishing process for the specified surface area or the full surface of the precision parts.
  • Surface Treatment: When all the dimensions of the parts are reached, we may also need to do some surface treatment or called coating, for the precision components.
The surface treatment has the functions of hardening the surface of the parts, preventing rust and corrosion of the parts, and making the parts durable for use, etc.
The common surface treatments include: Blackening, Nitriding, TiN, TiCN, AlCrN, DLC, TA-C, WC-C, etc.

Applications of Single Part Machining

  1. Precision mold components(sleeves and pins, cavities, cores).
  2. Tooling and dies(e.g., stamping die components).
  3. Custom fixtures and jigs.
  4. Machine replacement parts.
  5. Prototype components before mass production.

Advantages of Individual and Single Component Machining

  • High flexibility for custom or small-batch production.
  • Allows testing and refinement before mass production.
  • Enables high precision and tight tolerances.

Disadvantages of individual and Single Component machining

  • Higher machining and manufacturing costs for just a single unit.
  • Complex geometry that cannot be made by just one kind of machine. A single part sometimes needs to be processed by various kinds of machining machines step by step. For example, first by CNC milling, then by wire cutting EDM, and then by surface grinding, etc.
  • Extreme tight geometric tolerances in different places within one single part that need very precise machining control. If controlled well, it would be ok.

individual single part machining

So there’s all about the Individual part machining. If you tell us what kind of parts or materials you’re referring to (e.g., mold inserts, shafts, housings, stainless steel, aluminum, carbide), we can give you a more specific machining process flow and estimated machining costs and machining time.
